Clothed for the Season

2011_02_23d

First of all, let me admit to you how out of my comfort zone this outfit is. I found this dress at the thrift store and threw it into the cart, only taking time to contemplate it's style once I was at home. When Phil saw it, he raised his eyebrows. "Kinda loud," he said. Which made me even more determined to make it work.

My attempt to tone down the loudness was to wear it with different layers of neutrals. Oh, and a necktie to bring a vertical element into all of that horizontal madness. Probably wouldn't have done the tie if I didn't have the vest, though. I think it would've been a bit much.

Tryin’ Hard to Look Like Gary Cooper

Gary-cooper-fashion

There's something about a well dressed man. He has dignity, style, charisma, and usually a good set of manners. A regular guy seems to be transformed into a gentleman with a set of stylish suspenders, a pair of tailored trousers, and a simple hat.

I've been pretty lucky that my husband, Phil, has taken to upping his snazzy ante as of late, and actually enjoys stepping out on the town looking like a Dapper Dan man. In fact, he was even wandering around our apartment singing the Irving Berlin song, Puttin' on the Ritz. Now that's my kind of man.

Hair style is as important as the clothing ensemble, don't you think? I love James Dean's do, and Phil has been working to replicate it a bit with his head of extremely thick and somewhat curly hair. It's no easy task, let me tell you! But a bottle of mousse and a hairdryer works wonders.

I've rounded up some of the images that have been inspiring me lately in the menswear department. Some might be a too flamboyant for Phil's aesthetic, but that doesn't mean I can't adapt them for my own wardrobe, right?
