My home is turning into a storefront.

Clothes-coming-soon
Well, the shop is starting to take over our home. What can I say? I need a real brick and mortar storefront! It’s something I’ve been thinking about delving into this year. I have even started thinking about my business plan and maybe applying for a small business grant from the city of Canton, Ohio, where I live and love.

I used to have a room (that is meant to be the apartment’s living room) where I kept all of the shop goods, but the problem was, Phil was turning the big dining room table in our great room into a desk, and let’s face it, his work is less pretty than mine. So we decided to relegate his office space to the dining room. I think he likes it.

So, here I am. With clothes, hats, and clothes all over my home. Sometimes I don’t mind, and I actually find it inspiring. At least it motivates me to do more shop updates!

Another motivation? Hangers! It sounds so silly, but I only have so much room for clothing storage, and I only have so many hangers. After a couple of really great thrifting trips, I end up with piles of clothes, and it’s hard for me to stay organized. Hanging up clothes really helps me stay on top of the situation. So, whenever I make a sale, I get really excited about having extra hangers! Oh, it’s the little things in life, I suppose.

While I was getting orders ready to ship today, I was enjoying some vintage ’40s tunes. I really love the Andrew’s Sisters, and I’ve mentioned before, it’s a weird (and futile) ambition of mine to be the fourth Andrews Sister. That would be the day. Sigh.

Where we lay our heads…

I thought I would give you all a little true-life (no nonsense) tour of the little nook in my bedroom where we now sleep. The only time you will find our bed made is if I’m taking pictures for a magazine, or if Phil wants some action. :)

Our mattress set, which belonged to my parents before they upgraded, is situated on a $20 steel frame which we purchased at a big box store. On the box spring is a wrinkly dust ruffle. The pillow cases don’t match, but we like it that way. Mine is pink and floral; Phil’s is blue and white pinstriped.

Behind where my head lays, you will find a love note written to me from Phil when we were still dating, six years ago. I think it’s really sweet to remember our love when it was young. I grabbed the frame from a thrift store for a quarter.

My closet is really tiny, so I like remind myself what’s smooshed inside by rotating dresses onto my walls. These two are the current picks, along with a scarf I wore with a red dress yesterday.

My favorite piece in the bed nook is the antique quilt that Phil’s grandma gave us for our wedding. She found the top at an estate sale, and hand quilted it herself! I’ll show you more of my bedroom when my coverlet is complete, and the shelves are all built.

So, my bedroom is coming along well! Just a couple more construction projects (involving a table saw and woodglue) before most everything is complete. I’m also making a coverlette for my bed, but more on that another day. :) If you like to see the before photos, check out this and this post from last Fall.

The biggest change to the room is turning it into what I call a sleep-in-closet. So, a lot of the wall space is covered with clothing racks for all of my vintage clothes. In rearranging the room, I was also able to utilize the great empty space that was in the middle of the room before. In the final reveal, I’ll share a floorplan before and after.

Also, I picked up some cute things from antique malls this week! I’m not sure which items will be staying in the bedroom, and which will make their way into the living room. But I was quite proud to score all of these things for less than $80 total. Antiquing in Ohio is pretty much the greatest. :)
