INSPIRED BY: Laura Petrie- In Color!

Laura Petrie in Color The Dick Van Dyke Show

Television and movies can be pretty powerful sources for fashion inspiration, but when you’re constantly watching the black and white classics, as I am, your wardrobe can easily become increasingly drab. Lately, The Dick Van Dyke Show has been continually playing in the corner of my computer as I get work done, or on our tv screen when I’m nursing baby Lucy. I’ve become obsessed with Laura Petrie’s (Mary Tyler Moore) classic wardrobe, but in turn, I’ve noticed that I’m starting to favor black, white, and gray in my personal style choices. It’s silly, really, because do you think those are the only colors Laura Petrie wore? Doubt it! After that realization struck me, I began to daydream about what colors Laura’s outfits really were. Here’s a little peek inside my head, and Laura’s newly technicolor wardrobe.

It gets pretty Pleasantville, doesn’t it? Colorizing Laura Petrie’s wardrobe was sort of addicting, and now I want to do the rest of the characters, and the Petrie’s living room too! It’s like a coloring book for crazy adults. Kind of therapeutic! I know. You guys probably think I’m pretty nutso. But when inspiration strikes… you just gotta do what ya gotta do.

Laura’s my most recent style icon to emulate in my own personal fashion choices. Who are your favorite style icons from tv shows?

Fashion Inspiration: 1969 BACK TO SCHOOL STYLE

Do you ever try to imagine yourself living in a different time? Sometimes I think about wearing corsets and cooking over a fire, but most often I envision myself living in the ’60s, when families rarely locked their doors, the Beatles were a new sensation, human rights activists were in full swing, and hey, you could still find a good mix of big hair and long, free flowing locks. Looking at these high school students from 1969, it’s confirmed. I can definitely see myself living amongst these kids, without their ever knowing I’m an impostor from the future.

So what do you think? What era would you like to slip into for a week, or maybe longer? Would you ever dress like these 60’s teens? I’m truly digging the suede, gingham, paisley, and the colors too! Mustard yellow, jewel purple, olive green… just take me back!

Hair Style Icon: SYLVIE VARTAN

Nothing inspires me more than the mod fashion sense of 1960’s style icons. Sylvie Vartan is exactly my ideal, if I were a blonde, that is. But just because her hair is a million shades lighter than mine, doesn’t mean I can’t be inspired by her style!  I think her mid ’60’s hair style is the perfection transition cut to get me from my last style to my next one. And who knows what that will be!

Sylvie Vartan emerged in the 1960s during the French YeYe movement in pop music. She married a rock star and trail-blazed the modern music scene with her song and dance performances, all the while setting trends with her schoolgirl-glamour style. Her demure outfits, including Peter Pan collars, pussy bows, and pastel alongside classic black and white color schemes, are so enviable, and the cute bob hairstyle and dramatic ’60’s makeup is an iconic look I’m dying to try on for size!
