Movie Mondays: Pretty in Pink

Pretty in Pink 7

Sometimes when you’re feeling blue, the best remedy is a smart, romantic teen drama- ? la John Hughes. Pretty in Pink stars Molly Ringwald (duh!) as Andie, a smart cookie with plenty of style too. Way too much of an individual to fit in at her high school.

She works at a record shop and spends most of her time with her childhood best friend, a charismatic and rather obnoxious young fellow who goes by the name “Duckie.” Duckie happens to be in love with Andie, but she’s too busy dreaming in her own little world to pay much attention to her doting friend.

While working at a record shop, Andie begins a flirtation with Blane, a charming rich kid from her school. Conflicted as to whether or not she could hit it off with someone from the other side of the tracks, she continues to make waves with Blane’s friends, while simultaneously hoping he will ask her to prom.

Ah, remember the days of waiting by the phone for your crush to call? Wishing to be your own person, but worrying what others might think? It’s terribly fun watching Andie go through all of these outsider-high school feelings that I remember, and falling in love along the way. A perfect movie for a Valentine’s Day evening at home!

Movie Mondays: The Last of Sheila

The Last of Sheila

Lately I’ve been really into murder mysteries, especially the “who dunnits!” This particular film has a lot of personality, style, and a very interesting plot. A movie producer’s wife is killed in a hit-and-run accident, and one year later, he rounds up the possible culprits for a weekend of parlor games on his yacht.

All of the friends and enemies who show up for the weekend are suspicious as to the producer’s motives, but manage to have a good time playing elaborate murder mystery games as they dock at different cities for the day.

Things get out of control when someone is killed for real, and the crew set their minds to figuring our who the murderer is, before the police can make it out to the island to investigate.

Some of the plot twists are pretty predictable, but I was definitely still guessing what was really going on up until the end of the film. I definitely recommend this movie, especially if you’re the type of person who enjoys Agatha Christie stories. as this one definitely reminded me of her style of drama, set in the 1970’s.

Movie Mondays: Desk Set

Desk-set-1-spencer-tracy

I always enjoy a movie that peeks into the social workings of midcentury American office life. This particular movie, starring Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy, is a real gem in the slice-of-history respect. And you’ve really gotta love a Hepburn/Tracy combo. Their chemistry is unforgettable.

The women working in the reference department, who have spent years and years filing random information into their pretty little heads, are worried about their job security when Spencer Tracy’s character, a mechanical-brain engineer (aka: computer technician!) is brought in to measure their department’s facilities.

And that’s not all Katherine Hepburn’s character is worried about. She’s been in a six year relationship with a company executive. And is just waiting for him to pop the question.

When things start to fall into place in her personal life, everything at work is falling apart. And nobody but the girls seem to care. The company Christmas party comes just in time to relieve them of their worries, until everything culminates and things get out of Miss Hepburn’s control.

Desk Set is a charming movie jam packed with flirtatious banter that is sure to entertain. The storyline is a fun look at office life and new technology of the 1950s, as well as an expose on the life of a strong-willed working woman from the turn of the century. I think you’ll like this romantic comedy!
