What Would Laura Wear?

So much enjoyment was had after my Dick Van Dyke Show coloring fest, I thought we would all appreciate even more fashion inspiration from the famous Laura Petrie! I’ve been tremendously inspired by Mary Tyler Moore’s incarnation of a 1960’s stay-at-home-mom, causing me to break a several year streak of wearing mostly dresses. Yep, that’s right! I can’t get enough of nice, tailored cigarette pants and classic tops, thanks to Laura.
Rob Petrie’s spunky and supportive wife used to be a dancer, but now Laura spends her days chasing around their rambunctious son Richie, cleaning and cooking in their ranch home, and staying involved in the PTA. Her style is classic and refined with cute girlie touches here and there, but it’s also completely practical for the life of a busy mom. What’s especially inspiring about Laura Petrie’s wardrobe in The Dick Van Dyke show is how often her character remixes everything she owns. Watch a few episodes, and you’re bound to catch Laura wearing the same thing twice! That’s the kind of closet I’d like to build.

Hello from Toronto! I’ve been a big fan of your blog for a while. I know you’re from Ohio (cleveland?) and I am taking a week long trip to Cincinnati and later Columbus where my boyfriends band is playing. I was wondering if you know of any vintage stores or second hand places that I should check out. Thanks!
-Jenny
Hi Jenny! I’m not familiar with those cities. Cincinatti’s in the opposite corner of the state from me, and I seem to only visit on holidays when shops are closed, so I’ve never checked out what the city has to offer! I’m sure a quick Google search will reveal some hot spots. :) As far as Columbus goes, I haven’t shopped there either, but my sister-in-law keeps promising to take me. I’ve heard Short North has some can’t-miss vintage shops! Have fun! If you make it up to Cleveland, there are many must-stop places I can tell you about. :)
This is fantastic!! I’ve always loved the show – I watched it on Nick at Nite as a kid (it was on right before the Mary Tyler Moore Show). Thanks for the memories. :)
I love the vintage styles you picked out! Very cute!
My mom used to watch this show all the time when I was younger. I love each outfit, so perfect. Definitely checking out the black and white outfit, so classic.
Always,
Mostly Lisa
