WHAT I WORE: My First Design!

Making Nice in the Midwest

Ever sit around dreaming of clothes you wish you could have if it wasn’t for one tiny little problem… these clothes don’t exist? Honestly, I’m not sure if I’m a weirdo, somewhat vapid, or just a closeted clothing designer, but I can’t stop dreaming of an imaginary wardrobe. Recently I was particularly hung up on a cropped back-wrap style top in a ’60s floral pattern. Of course, I couldn’t find this exact top in stores, so I did something I’ve never done before— I created my own pattern and whipped one up this past week!

Making Nice in the Midwest

I’m so excited to share with you how I created my own pattern and assembled this reversible wrap-top, but I won’t have the post ready for you all until next week. Honestly, it would be much easier if you could just come over for an afternoon and we could work with the sewing machine together, because I know posting tons of step-by-step pictures tends to be intimidating, especially for beginners. But this project was pretty simple— I think it’s worth a little fiddling! And making your own clothes is pretty fulfilling. I haven’t done it since I was pregnant two years ago, thanks to a broken sewing machine. But now my machine is up and running and I’m hooked again! What’s next? I’m thinking a pair of high-waisted shorts. In the meantime, here’s where you can find the rest of what I’m wearing:

I’d love to try and sew something on my machine, but I have to fix it first too.. The design is really cute, but I was blown away by your tattoo! It’s freaking amazing. I’ve never noticed it before!

This is gorgeous, Mandi! And fits you to a “T”! I can’t wait to see the tutorial. As a forever beginner seamstress, I have always wanted to make my own clothes, too. I think this will be a great project to start with!

Love it! I’m the exact same way. My husband always laughs when we go shopping because I know exactly what I want and never find it. Consequently I’ve been drafting my own patterns for a few years as well! It’s so much more fulfilling anyway.

Oh my gosh, I love this! You look so absolutely adorable in this whole outfit. And I don’t think you’re crazy, because I definitely dream up my own wardrobe all the time and am always disappointed to never find what I’m looking for. I’m not a sewer at all though (or at least, I just haven’t learned yet). Maybe I’ll just dive in head first with this adorable top!

I could totally see me wearing this with a high skirt! And I have loads of fabrics in my stash as well.
After a big move last year, I recently found the time to sew again. Can’t wait to make this top!

I know that feeling of thinking about an outfit but not being able to find it anywhere, especially when you wear size “extra long” in everything :) Amazing that you are crafty enough to whip your dream top up yourself! I could never do that. It’s adorable too, I love it.

Wow, that looks fantastic, you are so talented! Keep designing, I love where you’re headed! Wish I could take you up on that sewing afternoon, I am so intimidated by patterns! I love to freehand stitch and embroider but I’m terrible when it comes to sewing anything precise.
You should be so proud of yourself!
