Fair Days with My Fair Gentleman
Yearly rituals certainly have a strange power- though not as strong as the power held over me by the delicious crunch of a warm funnel cake. Remembering the colorful crowds of Canton’s finest, the stinky animals, and the general feeling of “this is it? this is what we paid 7 dollars for?” from last year’s fair, Phil and I decided not to go this year. Until, while driving down the road from somewhere unimportant, I suddenly announced, “We must go to the fair! What are we thinking? We have to wait a whole ‘nother year to make this decision. And I could really go for a funnel cake.”
I am always caught up in the brightly painted food carts, rows of shining bulb lights, and retro signage. But I had to practically muzzel myself from talking about how exciting it would be to hop in my DoLorean and visit the fair as it existed 60 years ago. But could you imagine? Crowds of mostly well-dressed people who treated themselves and others with respect… or at least that’s how it exists in my mind. My dad insists it still wasn’t that great all those years ago, but a girl can dream, eh?

This is really making me miss the state fair!
Mandi,
Thank you for sharing such beautiful photographs.
I love the vintage signage. I agree. I always think that the past was way better. It’s fun to think about and try to bring some of those traditions back into life.
Thank you for your lovely thoughts and photographs.

Great photos! I’ll always love the idea of going to the fair, although as you said, it’s always a little let down. It’s just something you have to do!
My roommates and I just attended the county fair two weeks ago and though the lines were long and people were rude, we had a good time just being college freshmen and deciding to just go on a whim. We enjoyed the funnel cakes and the bright bulbs. It made me think about how excited I am for the state fair. Good memories <3
Ahhhh, carnivals and fairs – I have a love/hate thing with them too…love always wins out!

That looks like a lot of fun :) When I was younger (from age five to about age eighteen), I spent pretty much all week (although I would go home to sleep) at our county fair every year because I was in 4-H and had animals there. I haven’t been there more than once or twice since then, but hearing about and looking at photos of fairs makes me feel so nostalgic!

This is such a beautiful post. x
You and your husband are too adorable!! And I have to say that having to go to the fair for funnel cake is seriously unfair. Especially in Georgia, ahh rednecks. :)
I’ve never tried funnel cake–I hear it’s pretty delish.
The fair (or The “Ex”–short for exhibition) that comes to my town is a bit sketch. I haven’t been there since a child (the fact that a worker was smooshed by a ride didn’t entice my parents to take me).
This one looks very cute and kitschy and I love your dress!
