Beauty | Supporting my Inner Sweater Girl
Of all the things to go in and out of style, bust lines certainly rank among the silliest. Recently I’ve noticed some throwback silhouettes in couture fashion, and I can’t help but think that this is a trend I can get behind. Literally.
During the mid 20th century, knits came into fashion, and more women began to pay attention to how their bodies would appear undearneath of the new fashions. Men enjoyed oogling the way sweaters draped on a woman’s body, which created the advent of “the sweater girl.” Popular sweater girls included movie actresses such as Lana Turner and Jayne Mansfield, while models like Betty Brosmer actually received the titles as “Miss Sweater Girl.”
I decided that it’s about time I work on my own sweater girl sillouette. It’s fun, it’s different, and hey, who knows? Maybe it would be a good conversation starter! During my quest for a wearable bullet bra, I found lots of great deadstock items on Etsy and Ebay, but concerned with achieving an accurate fit, I decided to delve deeper and look for modern bullet bras.
Here are the three options I found at What Katie Did’s Amazon store (1 2 3). Now I’m just waiting for my order to arrive in the mail! What about you? Would you ever wear a bullet bra?

I wouldn’t have even thought of getting a bullet bra- but I am loving the idea! I can’t wait to hear how it goes. xoxo
I found a vintage deadstock one in my size at a shop one day & couldn’t pass it up just ’cause. Let’s just say people would really NOTICE a difference on me…they already know I’m not workin’ with much :)
I purchased some vintage inspired underoos of the non-bullet nature, but who knows maybe just maybe I’ll cave & get something from The Loved One…if they start making smaller sizes. I hope they do!
Oh, I love my bullet bras! They are dead stock from etsy, but I’ve been lusting after the ones on What Katie Did. Hope you enjoy them!
xo,
Em
Excellent post! I’m not sure if I’d wear a bullet bra. I think I probably would if I had the perfect vintage outfit.
I was just discussing the evolution of boob shapes (I can’t talk elegant none)! It’s so weird how that’s something that would change.
I’m not a fan of bullet bras, but I’ve said this about many things so in a year I probably will be. Ha!

I can’t wait to see how you style it! :)
I bought a vintage bathing suit years ago that had bullet-like inserts, which did really look quite amazing.
You’ve inspired me to keep an eye out for a proper bra.
Ooh, I don’t know…maybe? I bet it will look super cute on you, though!
Betty looks hot in that last photo! I am totally digging this too since I just looooooove sweaters. Wonder where you can get a bullet bra?
These are the type my mother uses. Recently, the store she bought them on Milwaukee Ave. (Chicago) closed and she almost lost it. She’s been wearing them since she was a little girl. Of course, we took to the internet and found them. She is beyond relieved. I showed her this post and she said ‘See, I like her! Those are the boobs I like, too!’ hahaha.
I have to say though, I hate her bras. Might have something to do with hers being the long front-closure ones.
This post is fantastic! i just recently purchased a vintage bullet bra in my size, but ive been to afraid or shy to wear it out. I really do love it though. I cant wait to see you pull it off.
By the way, today is the first time i noticed that playlist you have on the side. hurrah for you. you have wonderful, wonderful taste in music.
I can’t wait to see how this looks on you. I personally can’t get into the bullet bra look. I love a good tight sweater, but I like a natural silhouette under it.
As a big chested woman (technically a Buxom,) I have definitely considered getting one but I have not done it yet. Now, your entry has given me the motivation I needed!
i cant believe you posted this because I have been searching for a bullet bra all week!! I got really excited that you found some on amazon, but when i looked they dont have my size :( the mission continues….
Haha! Brilliant post! I wore very occasionally what I thought was a relatively (I must have had some suspicions otherwise) modern shaped bra to school. My new bf later on that year asked me whether I was going to wear the “Madonna” (ca. 1980s) bra ever again. I am not sure he liked the cone like effect, but then again it did make me stand out to him.
I sort of have a bullet bra from the 50s but it doesn’t fit me correctly (the size is a little small, which is odd because I’m small busted as it is). I would wear them more because I really like them, and my husband likes that bra (even though it is so uncomfortable), but I am small busted that I don’t think I bullet out very much hahahahaha.
Last photo of Brosmer was not in a Bullet Bra.
Looks pretty natural to me.You should post her Miss Sweater Girl 1958, that was in a bullet bra for sure
Hey I don’t know what size you are looking for, but I am listing a 36B on ebay tonight…here’s what the title will say: NWT NOS WHITE LONGLINE BRA BY CARNIVAL SIZE 36B SO “MAD MEN”!!
I was bopping around the web looking for “sweater girl” pix to borrow for my auction and happened upon your blog. Pretty witty. Take care and be well! Always, kath~
