Hair How-To | 70’s Waves for Humid Days
It’s that time again! When most girls complain about how big their hair gets in the humid weather, when meanwhile mine flattens away to nothing. Right now, it’s starting to get pretty hot and humid outside, and I try to keep my air conditioning off for as long as possible- which means, my apartment isn’t much different than the great outdoors. So what do I do about that flat-haired styling problem?
Out of sweaty frustration, I usually twist my hair up into a bun (sometimes simply knotting it to stay secure) and shove a nearby pencil or couple of bobby pins into my locks to secure their place. At this point, my hair is already slightly damp from the heat and humitidy*, and it feels so frefreshing to have it all off my neck.
After an hour or two of refreshing air on my shoulers, I take out the fasteners and let my hair fall down. And check it out! Waves. No other time of the year can I produce wavy hair from these slinky, straight locks of mine. Alright, humidity, maybe you’re not that bad after all!
*If your straight hair isn’t suffering from humidity, and you also want to get this look, just dampen your hair, or don’t dry it completely after showering. Then, wrap up into the bun and allow to dry for a couple of hours before unfurling those wavy locks.

On super hot days I generally opt for a good ol’ reliable topknot!

I am just like you! Limp hair is my enemy of all times. Great tip and trick! Have you also heard of Bumble and Bumble’s new texture cream? I think it will spice up your hair even more plus it adds the right amount of volume!
I do this with my hair too although I only have to leave it up for about twenty minutes and it works its magic.
Nice and simple! I like!
yeah… i’m a big hair girl. but i do the same to calm it. Haha. I put it up there in a bun in the morning for an hour or so, and i get the same affect… my big frizzy waves transform into smoother ones.
(also, if while it is damp you make 3-4 “dreads” before pulling it up, it looks awesome too)
I have fine curly/wavy hair, and I actually use this method to control frizz when it’s humid. If I don’t put it up, it seems like every lock curls on its own, creating what I call the HUMIDITY DETECTOR HALO. If I put it up (I also usually just knot it or twist it around itself, maybe add a few bobby pins), then those locks curl together and voila! No more humidity detector.
An aside: I’ve been following your blog for just a few weeks. I freaking adore your tattoo.
Hi Philbear! (I haven’t said hi to him through your blog recently)
And your wavy hair looks beautiful darling! I cant wait to see you in a few weeks!
I have naturally wavy hair, but when it gets humid it starts to look more like a brillo pad. Putting my hair up in a bun helps to keep it from frizzing out and also makes my waves and curls look more neat and less frizzy when I take it out…the trick is to dampen the hair just a little before putting it in a bun.
Oh by the way, love the first photo of your hubby checking you out in the mirror…very cute!
I was just thinking that too @ Phil admiring you, too cute! I love your hair this way.
cute. When I pull my hair out of a nice bun it looks horrendous. Just very kinky and frizzy. Not a good look for me :)
awesome thanks for sharing!
I do the same thing. I have your exact problemo my hair flattens out in no time no matter what I do with it.(I’ve even tried perms, with no such luck :( ) This is the only thing that I can get some kind of body with my hair.
haha. cute. I laugh because I have naturally really rivet-wavy hair (kinda like crimped looking but wider) so it won’t work for me at all. It looks so beautiful on you!!!!! Very smart idea.
