Woes of a Work-at-Home Housewife
Sometimes I’m too busy keeping a foot in every door, that I’ve no time to mind the clutter that has crept through my own. I take pride in creating a pretty and cozy home, with all of those personal touches that make it a nice place to be. But lately the dust is thick enough to write out “clean me” with a finger, it’s nearly impossible to walk across the floor without picking up little dirty bits on the bottom of your bare feet, and I have some misplaced furniture that needs a couple of hefty men’s strength to move. But if I look at my home with squinty eyes, or peer only at the places that have managed to remain clutter free, I can exist in this wide open space and still maintain most of my sanity.
I often feel like a bad homemaker for not keeping up with the day-to-day duties that come with having a home. (And before you tell me, “It doesn’t look bad at all,” just know that I’m showing you the rated G photos here… the places I allow my eyes to rest when it all gets to be too much. You should see my office area or my bedroom… eep!) I know Phil likes a tidy place to come home to. And I like a tidy place to get work done while he’s gone. But golly, that sun is finally shining awfully bright outside, and sometimes I have to choose between staying cooped up inside with a dust rag and a broom or hopping on my bike and high-tailing it to the nearest coffee shop. Today I choose the latter.

I understand. My apartment has been needing a good cleaning for a while…I’ll get to it…eventually.
Your house is just so adorable!
Oh my word. I just saw glasses like the one to the left of your french press at the thrift store the other day. They are so cute. There were a few of the tall like you have and a few more pudgy ones.
I would be happy to grab them for you if you are interested. Just email me.
I know how you feel, its hard to keep up with housework, but such is life. Your home is very cute, I really like the way you have your living room decorated.
welcome to my world, except i’m the person coming home to the mess and expected to clean it. btw, been a reader *lurker* for a while and i just love your personal and decor style!
you can always clean another day, at least that is what I?m telling myself when the dust bunnies seems to attack me when I?m walking through the door whilst the sun is shining outside…
Thanks for a very inspiring blog, and you seem to have a lovely home, I really enjoy these little sneak peeks!
I hear ya! I don’t know where all this dust comes from – it’s surely more than two humans and one cat can create.
I feel the same way!
I love how raw this post is. so frank! I love that picture of the French Press and the dusty table top! Good work.
Being a housewife is rough! haha.

So cozy and beautiful! I think you’re doing an excellent job maintaining the apartment.
I can relate to what your saying here. I also work from home and it’s almost harder to keep up with the house when i’m in it all the time and I’m contributing to the mess. I do however enjoy 5 minute dust breaks throughout my work day =)
I know exactly how you feel – it seems like I need to clean every single day but I can’t keep up with life on top of the house chores!! Until we have 34 hour days, my house will not be clean every single day! Great pictures – I love your place!

your “G-rated” rated pics are awesome.I’d love to work from home it looks so cozy.
What a beautiful fireplace you have! Is that your living room? I love the wooden floors, too – great basics to work with!
I don’t want to make you jealous, but our landlord hires a cleaner to come round once a week, and it’s included in our rent! She’s magic, I sure am going to miss her when I eventually move out!
your home is a wonderfully charming place that fuels your creativity. as a loyal reader, i am very happy for that!

Candice, I used to write for Apartment Therapy and posted about it there. It’s probably been floating around the internet since then. :)
