The rowdy
Recently my local lovin' town was ranked one of the most miserable places to live in the United States. What?! Ever since the news rocked Northeast Ohio, I've been contemplating doing a photo series on Akron (Cleveland and Canton too- they also got the slap around by Forbes) and the places that make it so great in my own eyes. In the meantime, I was browsing Flickr to see what other local photographers have to say about our city.
For credits, head here to my Akron flickr gallery.

It is so cool to see these pics of Akron. My dad grew up there and my grandparents lived there until they passed away a few years ago. I miss visiting so much! Thanks for the new perspective on old memories. :)
I’m from Dayton, and we’re one of the 10 dying cities among many other dubious titles. It’s always such a blow to be included on those lists, but what I’ve learned is use it as an excuse to celebrate your city by doing something creative as you’ve done here. Your photos and your city are lovely!
hehe, okay that gave me a little chuckle since my husband is from cleveland, oh. love your pictures – so much charm there!
Amazing images!
I hate those lists! I love your photos and all the LIFE it shows, still thriving, still creating, still existing.
Oh, cool! :) Looks like a lovely place, my dear. You’re lucky to live there!! he he. Can’t wait to see it through your lens, too, though the pictures you found are rad!
I was so salty when I heard about that list! What is Forbes thinking?! I mean yeah, the economy sucks and you kind of have to search to find cool things to do, but the cool things there are to do are AMAZING! So much cheap vintage and awesome food! What more do you need?
gah, you are awesome! i’m an ohio girl too–north central–and my best friend is from minerva, which is kind of up around your area. i get so irritated when people knock ohio, no matter what city it is. there’s so much creativity in this state and so many stories to be told and so much to be celebrated. thank you so so so much for these pictures and for representing ohio, mandi! <3
I have never been to Akron,Ohio (I’m from the center of France, supposedly the lowest in french taste) but I would love to, because I will be forever grateful to the hometown of singer Joseph Arthur, one of my favs.
Go Ohio!
I live in Canton and I had to go to Akron for music rehearsals… I may not completely loooove Ohio, but I would not call it miserable. It has it’s good and bad points, but all states do. Plus, there’s a lot music here and cool kids, so I’m content.
