Something Borrowed, Something New

Last weekend I tried something new. Well, a couple of new things, actually. I tried a 50mm lens, which I borrowed from Alex, lead singer for a local band, Variance. And I also tried my hand at shooting a live show. For Variance. It turns out I didn't use the 50mm lens much at all, but I did enjoy the difficult task of shooting a show from the sidelines. You can't exactly tell the guys what to do or how to stand. A bit frustrating, and challenging in a good way.

I also enjoyed the music of A Minor Bird, Searbird, and Sherwood. But I didn't take any pictures of them… because for some reason I feel silly taking pictures in public when I'm not doing so "professionally." Like I can't take pictures of the band unless I'm "with the band" Or else I will look like some groupie girl. I don't know. I'm weird. :)

What lens did you use instead of the 50mm? lovely photos :)
i love the 50mm, i’m always struggling with low light and focus!
I have that shyness about bands too, just to GET UP THERE! grrr.
i know some of my fave shots from other people were probably taken from odd angles etc when they were brave! :)

  4. yey Seabird! I love them!

I feel the sameeee way about shooting people if I’m not doing it professionally! I think once you (or I!) start shooting away, it’ll get more comfortable and no one will really notice anyway.
PS. Your photos that you did take look really good! And you should definitely try the 50mm again, its one of my favorite lenses and its a challenge sometimes but really worth it.

Ooh, that picture of the curly-haired bass player is wonderful! And I know what you mean about feeling awkward when taking pictures of bands you don’t know, I feel the same way. Too bad, though, because it’s excellent practice and I don’t think the bands would mind (especially if you offer to e-mail them a photo or two! ;)

i always feel silly taking pics of bands too when we go see local shows. i don’t want to look like a groupie! i already feel like one most of the time, b/c there’s this one local band that we see *every* time they play here. lol

So, I will definitely try the 50mm again. It’s just I am more used to switching between my 28 ad 85. So those were the two lenses I predominantly used to shoot this show. :)

  10. GREAT pictures!! And I feel the same, sometimes I feel super goofy in public taking pictures, especially when I’m the only one.
Wish I’d been there with you, looks like a fun time!!

Love these shots, taking photos of a live band is tricky, especially with the generally crap lighting but I think these are wonderful! Go you, hey :)

A friend of mine recently told me about your blog site and now I am hooked. I have never read a blog site before and I must say I am loving this! You have amazing taste, and great ideas. The pictures you take are stunning and the inspiration has set me a blaze with some new found passion for doing more artistic and fun things. So much fun. I am actually engaged to a drummer in a band here in Canada and I take tons of pictures too and sometimes feel the same…but if you like doing it just do it, they turned out great! Thanks again for the reading material and ideas:) I am loving your blog!!!
