Master Bedroom Reveal at A Beautiful Mess

I feel like I just shared the plans for our master bedroom, and now, BAM! It’s finished! This has definitely been the fastest turnaround for a room makeover in the history of my doing room makeovers, but that just goes to show how motivating a deadline can be. It’s all thanks to the Arhaus partnership I was able to work on with A Beautiful Mess, so head on over there to see the full master bedroom makeover, complete with step-by-step instructions for how to make your own board and batten wall like this!

After a week of enjoying this new space of ours, Phil and I still feel like we’re staying at a posh hotel, not in our actual home. Mission accomplished, I guess! We’ve also enjoyed exchanging amused glances at one another when friends and family remark, “Wow, it’s pink!”

When people on Instagram ask how I got my husband to agree to the color, I wish I had a better story to tell. But it was simply a matter of me saying, “What do you think about painting our bedroom pink?” He said, “What kind of pink?” I showed him a mock-up I made with elements we already owned, like this rug and curtains, plus the bed we had ordered from Arhaus. He said, “That looks nice.” So, that’s how it went, folks! I married a super easy going guy who also happens to enjoy the decorating I do in our home. I feel lucky to have him!

But tasked with finding the perfect shade of pink we’d both like, I was a little worried the hue we were choosing would be too neutral, appearing flesh toned rather than pink. But we were in agreement that we didn’t want to go too light with the color, or it would feel like we were sleeping in a little girl’s bedroom. So I grabbed a few sample cans of neutral-leaning pinks, smeared them on the wall, and studied each color in the evening light and morning light. Phil and I were in complete agreement and selected this shade of Sweetened Plum by Sherwin Williams*. Color always appears more vivid on the walls than it does on the little paint sample, so I’m glad I didn’t bother buying any brighter pink samples than this.

*Originally I had planned to paint the room in Benjamin Moore’s Flax, but I had a mix-up at the paint store, and walked out with Benjamin Moore paint for other rooms in progress, but not the bedroom paint! Because I had a deadline and needed to paint on Saturday evening and Sunday to meet my deadline, I had to select a new color from a paint store that was open during those hours. Bummer, but I do like the color we ended up with!

The girls were as excited as I was to have the room finished! Every morning when I wake up, I find them sleeping alongside me, and I certainly don’t mind the extra snuggles— especially now that we’ve upgraded to a king size bed!

This project was a lot of fun, and it’s made me feel reinvigorated about finishing up some other rooms in our home. Next up is Phil’s study! I’ll share an update on that room next week.

Kitchen Shelving + Holiday Table Decor

DIY open shelving wall

At long last, I’m ready to share the full tutorial+tips for building this wall of shelving! I built this entire thing completely by myself, and yes, you can too! I was able to use construction-grade pine lumber, but a lot of elbow grease and a few tricks helped make them look much nicer. I shared the entire process at A Beautiful Mess, so head on over to check it out if you’re keen!

Another fun project I shared at A Beautiful Mess this week is this fun mandarin tower table centerpiece. This craft was a huge hit at our house, as Lucy was able to make one without any help from me (shocked my socks off!), and the girls loved plucking mandarins from the tree to have for a snack.

We’re hosting a gathering on New Year’s Eve, and I think we’ll make a couple more towers for decorating our snack spread. They look so fancy, but they’re simple and economical to make.

Same for my shelving system! Well, okay, so it’s not exactly simple. But as far as woodworking goes, this is pretty straight forward. If you end up building something similar in your own home, I’d love for you to share it with me!

We’re very eager to finish up the last details of the kitchen project, which seems to be dragging on and on. It’s so tricky when you’re working on two spaces at once. We also have just finished up the living room completely (!!!!) and I’m sooo excited to share that with you very soon. Home renovations are exciting, but man, they are all-consuming. I’m ready to finally decorate for the holidays and take a little breather from all the drywall dust everywhere!

New Photoshop Actions with A Beautiful Mess!

abeautiful-mess-actions-before-and-after-natural-beauty-5

I’m so excited to announce the launch of the brand new A Beautiful Mess actions for Photoshop and Lightroom! If you really want to take your digital photography to the next level, this is the perfect tool for you! All it takes is one click, and your photos are completely transformed, and you can easily adjust opacity to change the strength of each effect. I love every single one of these filters, and have been using them on my photos for the blog and Instagram for a while now.

You may know that Sarah and I created all of the filters for the A Color Story app, and most recently we’ve been developing similar actions for people to use on their computers with Photoshop and Lightroom. I created a set of basic actions that come free with every Photoshop action pack, and I also designed 15 actions for the Natural Beauty collection and 10 actions for the Black and White + Enhance pack (which also contains some fun effects Sarah designed). Sarah did the Clean + Modern pack as well as Lightroom presets. There’s a lot to love, you guys! Sorry if it sounds like I’m gushing, but I totally am. This is a product I’m really proud of and very much enjoy using myself.

The Basics pack comes free with every action pack and includes five actions that make simple adjustments to your photos. Actions include: “Bright + Warm,” “Bright + Cool,” “Dark + Contrast,” “Sharpen + Pop,” and “Color Enhance.” You can apply these actions before using a more dramatic effect from another pack, or just use them on their own. Here are some examples of me using only actions from the basics pack to kick my photos up a notch.

The Natural Beauty collection is my favorite thing to use on my photos. I designed this pack to mimic the look of both film and vintage magazine editorials. If you’re tired of vintage-inspired filters adding a yellowy cast to your images, this will be a breath of fresh air to you! The filters from the Natural Beauty Collection gives you bright whites (with the exception of a couple of the filters), but the colors take on different moods and all feel very cheerful. I would like to tell you my favorite, but to be honest, I enjoy them all. The ones I use most frequently are “First Love,” “Teen Romance,” “Timeless,” and “Coffee Date.”

Check out some of my edits using filters from this pack! So fun, right?

Finding the right style of black and white editing can be frustrating, especially since your needs change from photo to photo, depending on how light or dark your image is, or depending on how much natural contrast there is. I created ten different black and white actions that will suit a wide variety of photos and styles, creating classic black and white photos that pop much more than a standard black and white effect. I think all of these filters are very usable, without being too extreme or trendy in style.

This pack also comes with effects like flares and light leaks that Sarah designed. Check them out here!
